Council Tax text and email Payment Reminders

FAQs

We have launched a new text messaging and email reminder service to help customers make their Council Tax Payments on time and avoid extra costs.

How does it work?

If you are late with your Council Tax payment, in most cases, where we hold a mobile telephone number or email address, an automated text message or email will be issued. This message is to remind you that your Council Tax payment is due and to offer you more convenient ways to make payment. At present this service will be in addition to our standard reminder process.

How do I know the text or email is legitimate?

We understand your concerns. Our texts and emails will never ask for personal or banking details and will only direct you to our official website or phone number. Messages include the missed instalment amount and your Council Tax account number, which you can check against your latest bill. They will also include a secure payment link to the Scottish Borders Council website. If you prefer not to use the link, visit www.scotborders.gov.uk, select the Council Tax tile, and choose Pay Council Tax online.

Can I reply to the text or email message I receive?

No, as the text messages and emails are automated, we are unable to monitor any direct replies. If you wish to contact us you can do so by reaching out via our website contact page.

Will my number be shared for marketing purposes?

No. Your personal information will be treated with the strictest confidence and in accordance with the Data Protection Act (1998). The service is confidential and information will not be shared with third parties outside of the Council for marketing purposes. Please visit our privacy notice for more information.

How can I avoid these in the future?

Please see your most recent bill. If you do not pay by direct debit, your monthly payments run from April to January and are due on or before the 1st of each month. If your payment has not been received by around 6th of the month we will contact you.

You can set up a Direct Debit online or by calling us on 0300 100 1800. This will ensure your payment is made automatically, reducing the need for further contact and effort on your part. You can choose to pay your Council Tax over 10 or 12 months, with a range of deduction dates and payment frequencies to suit your needs.

What do I do if I have already made a payment?

Payments made recently may not yet show on your Council Tax account, as Post Office and some online payments can take a few days to register. If you have already paid, you can ignore the text or email. If you are concerned and want to make sure that we have received your payment you can

  1. Check your banking app

  2. Check the receipt information you received when making the payment

  3. View your Council Tax account online View your Council Tax online | MyScotBorders | Scottish Borders Council

If you believe you have made a payment, but it does not appear in our records, you may receive a statutory reminder by post. If this happens, please do not ignore it. You must contact us so we can discuss the missing payment. You must provide details of the date, time, method and amount of your payment so we can try to trace it.

Will receiving a text or email affect my payment status or credit history?

No. If you have already paid, or pay the amount shown in the text or email, you should not receive a statutory reminder. Statutory reminder letters may affect your payment status, but they do not affect your credit rating.

What should I do if I am having trouble meeting my monthly payments?
