Traffic management and calming

Speeding

Police Scotland is the only organisation who can prosecute speeding motorist.

How we can help reduce speeds on the road

We can carry out a survey if there’s been no data collected within the last 8 years, or if there’s been a significant change that’s impacted speed since the last set of data was collected.

Requesting a survey

You should make your request to your local Community Council or local Councillor, rather than applying to us on an individual basis.

Once we’ve receive a request from the Local Community Council or Councillor, it’ll be added to the waiting list and carried out when the equipment is available.

How we use the data collected in the survey

We share the data with Police Scotland to they can target enforcement where necessary.

Changing speed limits

Changing speed limits is a lengthy, legislative process which takes about a year to be implemented. Rather than dealing with requests as they come in we consider them as part of the Speed Limit Review, which we carry out with Police Scotland every 2 – 3 years.

To decide the speed limit we use the Scottish Governments criteria for speed limits and is agreed by us and Police Scotland.

Requests to be considered for inclusion in a Speed Limit Review should be made to your local Community Council or local Councillor, rather than applying to us on an individual basis.

Other ways to limit speed

Other traffic calming measures can be considered if other measures aren’t appropriate, but we don’t currently have a dedicated budget for this.

In the event that funds become available we’ll assess the need to ensure that appropriate measures are taken, which may include:

  • Speed humps
  • Build outs
  • Signs
  • Lining
  • Speed cameras

If you would like to discuss a site at which such measures might improve a known speeding or other road safety issue, contact our Road Safety team online.
