School travel and road safety education

School travel plan

It is important to consult with school user groups when developing a School Travel Plan (STP).

Surveys are used to gather information and allow school users to feed their opinions and concerns into the Travel Plan process.

The STP is a package of measures, education, engineering and enforcement aimed at helping to:

  • improve the school run
  • reduce congestion
  • increase road safety
  • make pupils healthier
  • make routes to school as safe as possible
  • look after our environment

The 6-step approach to creating a STP is carried out in accordance with the Curriculum for Excellence, which identifies key principles for successful education.

The selected outcomes for each plan are advisory. Teachers may reject or add outcomes based on what they consider to be most appropriate for their school.

Ongoing evaluations of current STPs are undertaken.
