Inspection and quality

Inspections and quality

Inspections of schools are carried out by ourselves and by Her Majesty's Inspectors (HMIe).

School inspections

Schools carry out a number of activities throughout the year to evaluate how well they are doing. A summary of these activities are published annually in the Education and Lifelong Learning Standards and Quality Report.

Schools also produce an annual School Improvement Plan which outlines the way your school intends to continue to improve. These documents are available on your school's website.

Council inspections

We have a regular programme of Learning Community reviews. Contact school services online to request the outcomes of a review.

We, as the education authority, also carry out Validated self-evaluations (VSE). This is a voluntary evaluation process to improve the quality of the education we provide.

HMIe inspections

Education Scotland inspect a number of schools each year as part of their national monitoring of the education system.

Inspections currently consider how well:

  • children learn and achieve
  • children are supported in school
  • the school improves the quality of its work

About a year after the inspection, parents will be provided with an update from ourselves or Education Scotland on how well the school has been progressing with the areas identified for further development.
