Responsible dog ownership

Free microchipping for dogs

By law, all dogs over the age of eight weeks old are required to be microchipped under the Microchipping of Dogs (Scotland) Act 2016.

Microchipping your pet is one of the best ways to increase the chance of your dog being returned to you should it go missing.

Booking an appointment

Book an appointment now to get your dog microchipped for free:

Make sure you provide the following information when booking:

  • your name and address
  • your contact phone number
  • the name of your dog
  • the dog's sex
  • the dog's age/date of birth
  • breed/description
  • colour

Remember it is your responsibility to keep the microchip details up to date eg. change of address, phone number and/or change of ownership. It is an offence if you fail to do so.

Microchipping procedure

The microchips are supplied by Dogs Trust and are injected by our certified officer. They are injected through a sterile needle using a specifically designed implanting device under the dog's skin between the shoulder blades.

Collar and tag

By law, your dog must wear a collar and tag when out in public. A microchip does not replace the requirement for a collar and tag.

Some dogs and exempt from this rule, including:

  • working dogs
  • guide dogs
  • police/armed forces dogs
  • sporting dogs
  • emergency rescue dogs
  • packs of hounds
