Food hygiene information scheme

The Food Hygiene Information Scheme aims to raise food hygiene standards and consumer confidence. This allows people to make informed choices about where they eat and shop for their food.  There are approximately 1500 food businesses from the Scottish Borders included in the scheme .

Businesses are encouraged to display their most recent hygiene inspection certificate in a prominent position where it is clearly visible to the customer.

The scoring system

  1. Pass This indicates that the business broadly meets the legal requirements. This means that the conditions and the management procedures found at the time of the inspection were high enough to show that food could be provided in a consistently safe way.
  2. Improvement Required This indicates that the business has not met the legal requirements. (This may be because of the conditions and/or the management procedures found at the time of the inspection were not high enough to show that food could be provided in a consistently safe way.)
  3. Awaiting Inspection Where a business has not yet been inspected because it's a new business or changed ownership, it will be issued with a temporary certificate advising consumers that it is "Awaiting inspection".
  4. Exemptions A small number of premises may be registered as food businesses and it may not be obvious to their customers why. These businesses may serve food as a secondary function, such as a hairdresser or car showroom who provides coffee and biscuits to customers. When businesses like these are assessed it will be concluded that the food safety risk is negligible and they will be classified as "Exempt Premises" and no certificate will be issued.
