Bedroom entitlement calculator

The amount of Housing Benefit you can receive depends on the number of bedrooms you are entitled to. You get one bedroom for each of the following:

  • a couple living together (married, unmarried, or same-sex in a civil partnership)
  • someone who is 16 or older
  • two children of the same sex under 16
  • two children under 10
  • a child under 16

Additionally, you may get an extra bedroom if:

  • a non-resident overnight carer is needed for the claimant, partner, or child (up to a maximum of four bedrooms for Local Housing Allowance)
  • a household member cannot share a room due to a disability (up to a maximum of four bedrooms for Local Housing Allowance)

If you are under 35 and living alone or are a joint tenant your Local Housing Allowance may be restricted to the shared accommodation rate.
