Peer mentoring scheme

The peer mentoring scheme is a scheme run by our homelessness services. Peer mentoring consists of a group of volunteers who assist young people aged 16-25 years who are experiencing housing issues and homelessness.

Mentors provide informal support to young people through regular meetings and activities.

What's in it for me?

If you're a young person moving into a new community or even if you're staying in your community but would like to broaden your horizons, peer mentoring may be a positive step for you. Peer mentoring can help you can develop new skills and enjoy new activities. With the help of a specially trained peer mentor, you will:

  • increase your social networks
  • build confidence
  • reduce isolation
  • meet new people

You and your mentor will talk about what your aims and goals are and how they can help you achieve these. These are not set in stone and can change if you want them to.

There are lots of different activities that you can become involved with, for example:

  • going for walks
  • going to the cinema
  • applying for evening classes
  • learning a new skill or hobby
  • joining an exercise class or sports club
  • going for a coffee
  • making your house a home

Most importantly, you will decide what activities you'd like to do to help you achieve your goals.

How do I get a peer mentor?

All you need to do is ask your support worker, Homeless Officer or Prevention Officer to be referred and they will take care of the rest.

Contact Homelessness Services online for more information.

Will it cost me anything?

Homelessness Services will provide your mentor with some financial assistance to allow you to try out new activities, it's up to you and your mentor to make the best use of this money.
