Responsible dog ownership

Microchipping for dogs

By law, all dogs over the age of eight weeks old are required to be microchipped under the Microchipping of Dogs (Scotland) Act 2016.

Microchipping your pet is one of the best ways to increase the chance of your dog being returned to you should it go missing.

We're currently no able to offer a microchipping service. Should your dog need microchipping, we suggest contacting your local vet.

Collar and tag

By law, your dog must wear a collar and tag when out in public. A microchip does not replace the requirement for a collar and tag.

Some dogs and exempt from this rule, including:

  • working dogs
  • guide dogs
  • police/armed forces dogs
  • sporting dogs
  • emergency rescue dogs
  • packs of hounds
