No More RIDONKULOUS Car Trips
RIDONKULOUS is a behaviour change campaign that encourages and enables active travel such as walking, wheeling, cycling, scooting and horse-riding across the Scottish Borders.
The name RIDONKULOUS is a playful, exaggerated twist on “ridiculous”, meaning something is extremely absurd, silly, or unbelievable. It ties in with the bi-line, “No More RIDONKULOUS Car Trips”, referring to journeys of 5km or less that could easily be made by an active mode of transport.
RIDONKULOUS Initiatives delivered to date;
P3 Scooter Programme
Over 1000 scooters and helmets have been distributed to every P3 child in the Borders, encouraging them and their families to travel actively.
Agents of Change
We have around 50 Agents of Change (which include students and teachers across all Hawick schools) who are ambassadors for the campaign. As part of their role, Agents of Change were asked to interview someone they know about their travel habits, encouraging them to reflect on the choices they make. This activity also helped bring others in the community into the campaign.
Active Travel Events
We have hosted a series of Active Travel Events in the RIDONKULOUS pilot town of Hawick, including Gowaan Kids Bike Fest (October 2025), Learn to Ride Sessions (October and November 2025), The Big Bike Night In (March 2026) and the Light Up the Town event (March 2026).
Schools Video Competition and Live Lesson
We hosted a video competition through a Live Lesson inviting pupils from every school to create short films celebrating the ways they enjoy moving. We had around 30 fabulous entries, with winners recently announced. The primary school winner Izzy Graham secured a RIDONKULOUS Party for her whole class to enjoy. Scottish Borders Council | Flickr.
RIDONKULOUS Bridges Trail
The brand-new RIDONKULOUS Hawick Bridges Trail will officially launch soon, with dates to be confirmed, inviting locals and visitors to discover the town in a fun and refreshing new way.
A dedicated trail map is here, helping people explore the route and tick off Hawick’s historic bridges and landmarks along the way.
