Many Borderers woke up to heavy snowfall this morning, with up to 4 inches having fallen in some places.
Unfortunately the snow summary provided yesterday by our road forecast providers only highlighted very slight accumulations, where any did occur, so snow clearance did not start until 6am this morning.
Due to the minus temperatures forecast though we had planned to have staff out this morning on priority routes and footpaths in any event, and they will continue onto secondary and tertiary networks as resources and conditions allow.
We have also arranged for grit bins to be checked and refilled as they are emptied.
Further cold temperatures
The forecast for the remainder of the week is of some concern in that it is similar to what we experienced in mid-December, with temperatures of minus 6 or 7 overnight and day time temperatures struggling to get above freezing.
The main concern is that any remaining snow will become hard and impacted and whilst we will continue to salt routes and footpaths, this may have limited impact until temperatures start to rise again.
Service disruption
Unfortunately due to the conditions, particularly off the primary road network, some disruption is anticipated to kerbside waste and recycling collections.
Where collections are missed, crews will attempt recollection later in the week if resources allow.
Where this is not possible residents will be able to present side waste on their next scheduled collection day. For excess recycling this should be presented bagged, but not in black bags. Excess general waste can be presented in black bags next to their bin.
