Changes to free school transport
What are we changing?
We are adopting a new method of allocating places on school transport for eligible children across the Borders taking effect from January 2022.
From this date, school transport passes will no longer be allocated automatically to eligible children across the region. Instead, all parents and carers will be asked to complete an application form to register for a space on school transport.
This change is being made in an effort to reduce the carbon footprint created by school transport vehicles and to provide a more efficient home to school transport service.
Please note that the eligibility criteria for accessing school transport passes has not changed.
To help make school transport more environmentally friendly, parents and carers are being asked to only register their child/children if they intend on using the transport.
The application process applies only to our bus transport service for school pupils. The existing arrangements for all other forms of school transport will remain as they are currently.
How can I apply?
Applications are now closed.
The application window for securing places on school transport from January 2022 onwards was 9 July to 22 August 2021.
School transport for the forthcoming school term covering August to December 2021 will operate as normal, with bus passes being issued to eligible children and young people before the 2021-22 school year commences in August.
