Map advanced - user guide

The screenshot below highlights the key features of Map Advanced. An explanation of what these do and how they work is set out further below.

1. Legend

The Legend [1] serves two purposes. It allows you to select the data you want to see, and it shows how data is presented in the map. Boxes can be selected to turn on and off to view data. Plus and minus signs expand and close datasets.

2. Zoom and Scroll Buttons

The simplest way to pan or move the map is to click and drag with your cursor. To zoom in and out of the map it's easiest to use the scroll wheel on your mouse (if you have one). Roll the wheel forward one notch at a time to zoom in, roll the wheel back in the same way to zoom out.

Alternatively, the Zoom and Scroll Buttons [2] allow you to move around the map. Click the plus button once at a time to zoom into the map in stages. Click the minus button once at a time to do the opposite. The buttons above the plus and minus signs allow you to pan around the map. To zoom into a specific area, hold down the shift key, then hold down the left mouse button and draw the shape of the area you wish to zoom to on the map before releasing the left mouse button.

6. Tools

Map Advanced features a number of Tools [6]. The most important of these is the Identify button, which must be selected to interrogate data in Map Advanced. Click on a feature on the map (which you have turned on in the legend). An "identify Results" pop up box will return one or more results. Select the results of interest and further information on the identified feature will be presented. Some results may be links to further information (planning applications). The other Tools provide a range of more complex drawing and data selection functions.
