How much will it cost?
Before we can arrange any payment towards the cost of a care home placement we must assess your financial situation.
The cost of a service varies depending on your eligibility to receive it. A charge will be applied in line with your assessed needs and charges for services.
Visit our Charging for services webpage for more information.
Personal care and nursing care
The charge for living in a care home is calculated in two parts:
- personal care costs
- accommodation costs
Free personal and nursing care
- you may be eligible for financial assistance for some or all of your personal care if you have been assessed as requiring residential care
- you may be eligible for additional financial assistance if you have been assessed as requiring nursing care
- you will lose entitlement to both Attendance Allowance and Disability Living Allowance (Care Component) after four weeks if you claim free personal care
- please inform the Department for Work and Pensions that you are moving into a care home
Financial assessment
- a Community Care Assessor (Finance) will undertake a financial assessment to work out what your individual charges will be
- if you own your home, the value of your property will be discussed during your financial assessment, including options on deferred payments
- a deferred payment agreement is a legal agreement between both you and us which grants us a standard security over your home to cover the deferred amount
Visit our Deferred payments webpage for more information on this option.
