Sport and physical activity strategy

Our Sport and Physical Activity Strategy sets out a shared vision for a healthier, more active region.

It aims to help all residents enjoy the physical, mental and social benefits of being active.

The strategy has been developed in partnership with organisations across the public, health and community sectors. It recognises that sport and physical activity play a key role in:

  • improving health and wellbeing
  • reducing inequalities
  • strengthening communities
  • supporting economic growth

Our Aim

We want everyone in the Scottish Borders, regardless of age, ability or background, to have fair and equal opportunities to take part in sport and physical activity.

While participation is strong in some areas, there are still gaps. These particularly affect:

  • older adults
  • people with disabilities
  • people living in more deprived communities

Reducing these inequalities is a key priority.

Our Approach

The strategy is both sport-led and people-centred.

This means:

  • supporting community sport through clubs, volunteers and coaches
  • promoting informal and recreational activity, not just organised sport
  • creating clear, inclusive pathways for lifelong participation
  • enabling progression from beginner level through to higher performance

Our Priorities

Delivery of the strategy focuses on eight key areas:

  • enabling the system
  • sport and active recreation for all
  • active places of learning
  • active travel
  • active places and spaces
  • active health and social care
  • communications and public education
  • active workplaces

Measuring Success

We will measure progress by:

  • increasing participation in sport and physical activity
  • reducing inequalities in access and participation
  • strengthening community sport structures
  • improving progression pathways
  • enhancing health and wellbeing outcomes
