Coach and Volunteer Development
Sports National Governing Bodies (NGBs) are responsible for the delivery of coach and officials education relevant to their specific sports.
Sportscotland has a variety of education and development courses available across a broad range of topics including:
- sports psychology
- physiology
- female health
- concussion guidance
- child wellbeing and protection
Further information and how to book specific course is available on the Sportscotland website.
Our Sports Development team will support the national programmes with more regional based delivery across themes of talent development, safeguarding and first aid. Our partners Borders Community Action have also developed governance specific workshops.
Safeguarding
Many NGBs require their coaches and volunteers to attend Sportscotland’s Child Wellbeing and Protection (CWPS) Courses for both coaches and volunteers. There is also an additional welfare and Protection Officers course, which Club organisers, welfare officers and lead coaches may benefit from.
It is worth checking with your NGB if this course is a requirement of your role as these need refreshed every three years. The course is hosted, in part, through Brightspace and in part via online or face to face training.
Currently the CWPS course has a free online renewal process after three years of completing the course, which means only completing one full course every six years.
Full details of Child Wellbeing and Protection courses and how to book these can be found on the Sportscotland website.
The majority of CWPS courses are delivered online via a national governing body of sport. If you prefer to attend a local, face to face course, these can be arranged with sufficient notice. Please email: chris.bryant@scotborders.org.uk to arrange a course if you have a minimum of 6 learners requiring certification.
We offer coaches and officials the opportunity to gain a local insight into safeguarding practises and policies through an online course on public protection.
We advise all sports practitioners operating in the Scottish Borders to attend the introductory level PP2 which is ideal for people working with adults, children and young people.
