Copies of certificates

Anyone can get a copy of any Scottish birth, death or marriage certificate from 1855 onwards, or civil partnership certificate from 2004 from our Registration Service.

You can either:

  • Request a copy online using the registration enquiry from to make an enquiry. A registrar will then contact you directly, take payment over the phone and prepare your copy certificate to post out to you.
  • Call 0300 100 1800 to make an appointment to see a Registrar in any of our registration offices, where you will be able to pay for and collect your certificate at your appointment.

If you were adopted in Scotland and want a copy of your adopted birth certificate, you can only get this from National Records of Scotland.

How much will a certificate cost?

If the event was registered in the same month as the request, the fee is £10. The copy certificate is only available from the Registration office where that event was registered.

After one month of registration the fee is £15, which includes a search fee of £5. However, if you can show the Registrar an abbreviated or full certificate of that entry the £5 search fee will not apply. This is available from any Registration office.

Cheques should be made payable to "Scottish Borders Council".
