Exclusions

Every child has the right to feel safe, supported and included in school. Most children and young people enjoy school and are supported to thrive. Sometimes, however, serious incidents happen in school that mean a child may not be allowed to attend for a short time. This is called an exclusion. Scottish Borders Council is committed to making sure that exclusion is used only when absolutely necessary – and that every child returns to school with the right support in place.

What is an exclusion?

An exclusion means a child or young person is not allowed to attend school for a fixed period of time. It is only used:

  • When behaviour seriously breaks the school’s code of conduct, or
  • When staying in school would seriously harm the learning or wellbeing of others.

Exclusion is never used as a punishment. It is a last resort when all other supports have not worked, or the school is unsafe without it.

What happens if my child is excluded?

  • You will be contacted by the school and receive a letter explaining what has happened and why.
  • The school will provide learning materials and continue existing support.
  • A Return to School meeting will be arranged to plan for your child’s return and agree what help they need.

Support for you and your child

If your child:

  • Has additional support needs
  • Is care experienced
  • Is on the Child Protection Register

… the school must take extra steps before deciding to exclude, including speaking to professionals and ensuring support is in place. Children aged 12 and over have a legal right to express their views about exclusion. Younger children will also be supported to have their say.
