Register to vote

If you are not on the Electoral Register then you will not be able to vote in any election. Check if you are registered to vote by phoning the Electoral Registration Officer on 01835 825100.

Who can register to vote in Scotland

You must be aged 14 or over.

You must also be one of the following:

• British citizen
• Irish or EU citizen living in the UK
• Commonwealth citizen who has permission to enter or stay in the UK, or who does not need permission
• citizen of another country living in Scotland who has permission to enter or stay in the UK, or who does not need permission

How to register

The electoral registration system in the UK is called Individual Electoral Registration (IER). Find out more information on IER and what this means for you.

Individual electors can register to vote at any time by completing online registration and following the instructions provided. Alternatively, you can contact the Electoral Registration Officer on 01835 825100 and a member of staff will assist with phone registration. If preferred, an Invitation to Register form can be sent to you.

It is important that electors make their registration applications as early as possible after the event, such as when moving house.

If you are not able to attend a polling station on the day of an election, you may apply in advance to vote by post or proxy (have someone vote on your behalf). Different rules govern each of these methods of absent voting.
