Care Village Programme

Hawick Care Village

Approval was given at the Council meeting on 29 January to proceed with the refurbishment of Deanfield Care Home as part of the wider Hawick Care Village development. The project will create a modern, fully compliant 20-bed facility that supports enhanced residential, nursing and respite care.

This work responds directly to the needs identified in our communities, where there is adequate residential care availability but a shortage of support for people with higher levels of need, including those requiring nursing care.

What the refurbishment will deliver

The upgraded Deanfield will provide:

  • larger ensuite bedrooms, many with direct access to outdoor space
  • improved internal circulation, making it easier and safer for residents, staff and visitors to move around the building
  • enhanced garden and outdoor areas designed to better support people living with dementia and people with complex needs
  • a new main entrance and improved landscaping to create a more welcoming and accessible environment

Deanfield was built many years ago and extended over time. This refurbishment will ensure the building can continue to serve the Hawick community for many years to come.

Design and compliance

Detailed design and costings have now been completed. The proposed £8.7 million phased refurbishment has been developed in close collaboration with the Care Inspectorate to ensure all regulatory standards are met. This partnership working will continue throughout the construction period.

Engagement with the community

A comprehensive stakeholder engagement plan will support the project, ensuring residents, families, staff, partners and the wider community are kept informed and involved at every stage.

An initial public engagement session took place on 27 February, giving people the chance to view the proposed designs, learn more about the improvements and speak directly with the project team.

The wider Hawick Care Village vision

The refurbishment of Deanfield is part of a broader set of developments in Hawick. Work being progressed by Eildon Housing Association at the nearby Stirches site - including Extra Care Housing, amenity housing and general needs housing - is being funded separately but will complement the Deanfield project.

Together, the developments at Deanfield and Stirches will ensure Hawick has high quality, flexible and future-proofed care and support options for older people for many years to come.
