The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for wind which covers the Scottish Borders from Saturday evening through to Sunday evening.
Gusts up to 80mph are possible in some areas, particularly exposed coastal areas and high ground, with wind speeds of 60-70mph likely across the area between 9pm on Saturday and 9pm on Sunday. Periods of heavy rain and frequent showers are also expected.
Through today there is also a yellow rain warning across the majority of the region. Storm Austen will bring rain of up to 40mm widely, with up to 80mm in some locations which may bring with it a risk of flooding and travel disruption.
Be prepared
Some travel disruption is likely and there is also a risk of power cuts, tree damage, flying debris and property damage. Due to the saturated ground, there may be a risk of some flooding.
Local residents and businesses are urged to be prepared for the weather and resulting impacts.
Multi-agency response
A multi-agency Incident Response Group will operate from our Emergency Control Centre throughout the amber warning period to co-ordinate the response and any recovery efforts.
Please note, it may not be possible for us and contractors to safely clear fallen trees during periods of high winds or in the dark.
Updates and advice
During the amber warning period updates and advice will be communicated through our website, through the SB Alert emergency messaging system and social media channels.
Residents are encouraged to sign up to the free SB Alert system for further updates direct to their chosen email address.
