S6 pupils from secondary schools across the Scottish Borders gained first-hand experience of local democracy during a Youth Mock Debate in Scottish Borders Council’s Council Chambers.

The event brought young people together with elected members and Council officers to explore how local decisions are made, how the Council works and why young people’s voices matter.

The programme opened with a presentation from the Council’s Active Travel Team before pupils took part in a realistic council committee meeting. By debating, listening and influencing decisions, they developed confidence, critical thinking and communication skills while learning more about democratic processes.

Council Convener, Councillor Watson McAteer, said: “It was inspiring to see our young people bring such energy, insight and respect to the Council Chambers. This was more than a classroom exercise: it gave pupils an authentic opportunity to understand how decisions are made, test their ideas and see that their voices can influence their communities.

“By working together across schools, Council services and elected members, we are helping young people experience their right to be heard under Article 12 of the UNCRC.”

The second session was My Community, My Voice, an interactive workshop facilitated by the Council’s Community Learning and Development (CLD) team. It explored:
Issues affecting young people and their communities
How to influence change and make a difference
Community engagement and participation
Turning ideas into action

By the end of the day, pupils had built their confidence in speaking and debating, engaged directly with elected members and explored practical ways to influence decisions and make a positive difference in their communities.
