Earlston’s new destination playpark was officially opened yesterday Thursday 20 August.

The local community, including children from Earlston Primary and Leader Valley Schools, local Councillors, members from Earlston Community Council, Beyond Earlston, Earlston in Bloom and Earlston Community Larder, along with representatives from HAGs UK, gathered to officially mark the occasion.

The playpark

The playpark, situated next to the primary school, was developed following extensive community engagement and is designed to reflect the local context of Earlston. The bespoke centrepiece of the playpark is the huge Leaderfoot Viaduct unit, which has three main sections, all themed with a nod to the history of Blackhill Fort, featuring the viaduct between the main towers. Climbing challenges surround the unit, including scramble nets, rope ladders, climbing walls, climbing tyres, and rung ladders, as well as three slides and different types of crossings between the towers.

The toddler area features a Blackhill Fort style play structure with easy access low-level steps, a mini climbing wall, six towers, and colourful sensory roofs with castle-style play panels.   There is also a sensory area which includes musical items, fun house style mirrors, a toadstool house and seating, as well as a Rhymer’s Corner where stories can be read or word games played.

The playpark is inclusive and accessible, with low level games on both the multi units, play panels, a wheelchair accessible roundabout, easy access stairs, and low-level steps.  The seesaw and basket swing are both at a wheelchair transferrable height, with full body support seats on the swings, carousel swing, and springer.

The playpark investment forms part of the Council’s Capital Programme for Play Areas and Community Outdoor Spaces supported by Scottish Government funding.

The prioritised capital investment programme was agreed for the period 2022-2029 with play facility upgrades being planned in consultation with communities across a range of sites.  The programme will see an investment of almost £5 million to enhance these facilities for current and future generations, providing significant play opportunities for all.

Councillor David Parker, Executive Member for Integrated Care and Support Services:

“I was delighted to be involved in yesterday’s event and to officially open the new Earlston destination play park.  The design is incredible and has been created to reflect the Earlston community and surrounding area.

“I hope the children and families of Earlston enjoy the new play park for many years to come and thank the local community for their support and input in making this play park one that the whole community can enjoy”.
