Two outstanding pupils have been recognised for their creative talents and thoughtful reflections on life in an Armed Forces family.

In the national Month of Military Child Competition, Jackson Donaldson (P6) from Walkerburn Primary School was recognised for his artwork Winds of Hope.

While Brendan Barrie (P7) from Tweedbank Primary School, received an award for his poem Home is Where the Heart.

Resilience, pride and belonging

Both entries highlighted themes of resilience, pride and belonging. Jackson's artwork reflected the strength, courage and determination he sees in his father's military career.

While Brendan's poem offers a heartfelt insight into the challenges and opportunities of service life - from spending time apart from loved ones to experiencing new places and communities.

The pupils were presented with certificates and prizes by Councillor John Greenwell, Scottish Borders Council Veterans Champion and Scott Watson, Armed Forces Families Liaison Officer.

"Congratulations to both Jackson and Brendan on their well-deserved success.

“Their creativity and thoughtful entries provide a powerful insight into the lives of children from Armed Forces families.

“We’re incredibly proud of their achievements and grateful for the opportunity to celebrate the resilience, adaptability and contribution of our Service children."

National awareness month

The national Month of the Military Child takes place annually and highlights the unique experiences Armed Forces children face from frequent house moves and changing schools to periods of separation from family members serving in the Forces.

Recently, the Council made a firm commitment to ensure more than 380 Armed Forces families across the region are recognised and supported in line with the Armed Forces Covenant – ensuring no child is disadvantaged because of service life.
