A new walking route celebrating Hawick’s bridges, heritage and local environment is set to launch in the coming weeks.
The RIDONKULOUS Hawick Bridges Trail will provide residents and visitors with an opportunity to explore the town’s historic bridges and key landmarks through a dedicated route linking many of Hawick’s most recognisable locations. A trail map will be available to support those taking part.
Bespoke bench
A key feature of the project is a new bespoke bench located at the James Thomson Bridge. Positioned at one of the most scenic points along the route, the bench provides a place for people to rest, enjoy the riverside setting and take in views of the surrounding area.
The bench has been developed through a collaboration between the Council and local artist Mark Hume, with funding support from SEStran’s People and Place programme and Transport Scotland.
Jenny Linehan, Executive Member for Environment, Sustainability and Transport
"This project highlights the rich history and character of Hawick, creating new opportunities for people to discover the town’s bridges, rivers and green spaces through active travel."
The project forms part of the wider RIDONKULOUS active travel campaign, which aims to encourage more people to choose walking, wheeling and cycling for everyday journeys and leisure activities.
Trail
The Hawick Bridges Trail connects 14 bridges across the town and incorporates a range of local landmarks and points of interest. Covering approximately five miles (8km), the route highlights Hawick’s rich history, distinctive riverside landscape and community heritage.
From Jooglie Brig to Hornshole Bridge, the trail offers an opportunity to experience the town from a different perspective while supporting healthier and more sustainable travel choices.
Watson McAteer, Convener of the Council
“The new Bridges Trail will offer a great opportunity for people to explore Hawick's rich heritage and scenic riverside routes, and I would encourage everyone to watch this space for further details of the official launch and trail map in the coming weeks."
