English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) adult learners have been congratulated at a special Celebration of Learning event.
Organised by ourselves and Borders College, the celebration took place on 30 April at The Focus Centre in Galashiels, where the achievements of 33 ESOL learners from a range of nationalities were recognised.
It was also an opportunity for the learners to connect with each other and share their journeys, highlighting how developing their English skills is helping them take forward new opportunities, participate more fully in their communities and work towards personal and professional goals.
Feedback from learners
Learners spoke warmly about their experience of ESOL classes, describing how improving their English has helped them feel more confident in daily life — from writing emails and speaking with friends to engaging in their local community. Many shared ambitions for the future, including progressing into further study, training for careers such as social care or hospitality, and continuing to build their lives in the Scottish Borders.
They also highlighted the welcoming environment of the classes and the kindness of the wider community, which has helped them feel at home and motivated to keep learning.
Olena Darkova from Ukraine
“I go to our English classes because our teacher makes every lesson very interesting and engaging, and she explains everything very well. I became more confident in communicating with people in Scottish Borders and learned a lot about history and Scotland’s traditions. I like the wonderful nature, beautiful views and kind, welcoming people.”
Jenni Craig, SBC's Director Resilient Communities
“I’m delighted to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our ESOL learners. Their dedication and determination are truly inspiring, and it is wonderful to see the progress they have made through the varied learning opportunities available to them.
“Our strong partnership with Borders College continues to play a vital role in supporting this success, ensuring learners can access high quality provision that helps them build confidence, develop new skills and thrive within our communities. My warmest congratulations to every learner — they should be immensely proud of all they have accomplished.
“I would also encourage anyone who feels they could benefit from ESOL support to get in touch to find out more. This programme offers a welcoming and supportive environment in which to grow, and we look forward to helping even more learners take their next steps.”
