The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for wind which covers a large part of the Scottish Borders from 7pm on Saturday evening to 3am on Sunday morning.

Two underlying yellow weather warnings for wind split the region, running from 5pm this evening at the earliest to 12noon on Sunday at the latest.

Amber warning

The amber warning covers an area south of a line stretching from Moffat to Lauder and to just south of Cockburnspath.

Gusts of up to 70mph are possible widely, with some coastal or exposed locations seeing gusts of around 80mph.

Travel advice

Police Scotland have indicated that the conditions are likely to result in a high risk of travel disruption and have issued travel advice to the public, urging people to consider delaying travel until conditions improve.

The Met Office warning highlights danger to life and risk of injuries due to flying debris, large waves and flying beach material. There is a risk of damage to property and a chance of power cuts and other service disruption.
