The latest Making Skills Work update from Skills Development Scotland (SDS), which showcases strong progress in employability and skills development across the region has been welcomed.
Key highlights for the Scottish Borders include:
- Modern Apprenticeships: 767 apprenticeships in training across the region, supporting growth sectors such as construction, health & social care, and digital technologies.
- 243 new Modern Apprenticeship starts, with 56% aged 16–24.
- 105 Foundation Apprenticeship starts in schools (SCQF Level 4–6).
- Digital Skills Boost: The Digital Learning Initiative offers Borders residents access to training from leading tech companies, helping them thrive in a digital economy.
- Annual Participation Measure: 95.3% of 16–19-year-olds engaged in education, employment, training, or personal development.
The Local Employability Partnership (LEP) continues to play a pivotal role in shaping interventions that respond to regional needs. Through collaboration with public, private, and third-sector partners, the LEP ensures resources are directed where they have the greatest impact, supporting priority groups, tackling skills gaps, and aligning services under the No-One-Left-Behind strategy.
Recent initiatives include the “Know Your Network” event, which brought together employers, training providers, and community organisations to strengthen connections and share best practice. This event showcased how partnership working can unlock opportunities for individuals and businesses across the Borders.
Councillor Scott Hamilton, Executive Member for Economic Growth and Developing the Borders:
"The LEP ensures that employability support is not just reactive but strategically designed to meet the unique challenges and opportunities of the Borders economy. These figures show the power of partnership. With nearly 800 apprentices in training, 95.3% youth participation, and hundreds supported through the No One Left Behind initiative, we are delivering real opportunities for people and businesses across the Borders."
We remain committed to working with SDS and LEP partners to expand opportunities, support businesses, and ensure our workforce is ready for current and future jobs.
