A consultation has opened on a draft culture, arts and heritage strategy which aims to reflect local priorities and makes culture more visible, accessible and meaningful to residents and visitors.
Draft shaped by engagement
The draft strategy has been shaped by a series of engagement events and workshops across the Borders involving those in the sector and other key stakeholders.
It sets out a plan to celebrate, protect and grow the culture, arts and heritage of the Scottish Borders. Culture in the Borders is broad, including traditions, stories, historic buildings, creative industries, nature, tourism, and community events. It’s not just about entertainment, but also about our area’s identity, wellbeing, education and economic growth.
The consultation is open online until 1 February 2026. A copy of the draft strategy can be found alongside the online consultation.
An independent review of Creative Scotland, which has responsibility for funding, developing, influencing and advocating on behalf of the culture sector, has recently concluded, with a report published in November.
Councillor Carol Hamilton, Executive Member for Housing and Culture
“Working with partners, local and national stakeholders we have developed a draft strategy and it is now important for us to capture feedback from the wider public to ensure it meets local priorities, the needs of communities and supports those working in and enjoying cultural experiences in the Borders.
“Responses to the consultation will also help refine the strategy into an action plan which will guide the future of culture, arts and heritage in the area and help the sector to innovate and respond to national and local challenges as they arise.
“Over time we aim to create a thriving cultural ecosystem which touches all parts of the Scottish Borders. Culture is for everyone, and this strategy is about making sure that culture, arts and heritage is inclusive, accessible to all and sustainable now and into the future.
“Please take some time to read the draft strategy and give us your thoughts and input.”
