Cemetery and Burial Ground Management survey open for feedback

Published: 11th November 2025

We are encouraging local residents to submit feedback to a cemetery and burial ground management survey to help shape how these spaces are managed across the region.

Details of the survey

The survey, which is now live and available to view here, will help inform the development of our first ever Cemetery Strategy by gaining valuable insight that will ensure the services offered reflect the needs and values of local communities.

As a burial authority, we are responsible for the management and upkeep of 155 cemeteries and burial grounds across the region (we are not involved in any crematorium provision).

Once the survey closes, all responses will be analysed with a report produced on the findings which will then be used to inform the development of the Strategy.

The survey will remain open until December 15.

Physical copies of the survey are available by emailing the cemetery team.

Councillor John Greenwell, Executive Member for Roads and Public Space Development

“Conversations around cemeteries and burial grounds are extremely emotive, and as a Council we are extremely aware of the role we must play as caretakers in helping look after these spaces.

“That is why we have committed to developing the Council’s first ever Cemetery Strategy which will incorporate feedback and insight gathered from this survey and prioritise their continued improvement and maintenance.

“I would therefore encourage as many Borderers as possible to submit their views via the public survey to ensure as many views as possible can be incorporated and considered.”
