Hawick Flood Protection Scheme crowned project of the year at Scottish Civil Engineering Awards

Published: 2nd September 2025

The Hawick Flood Protection Scheme has been recognised for its engineering excellence, claiming a prestigious industry accolade at the Scottish Civil Engineering Awards.

Scheme recognised as exceptional civil engineering example

The scheme won the coveted Project of the Year and Resilience Award category which recognises exceptional civil engineering work that demonstrates excellence in design, construction and execution and makes a significant contribution to quality of life and the built environment.

The awards are widely recognised as being the highest honour for engineering excellence in the built environment.

Members of the scheme’s project team including Project Director Conor Price were present at the ceremony held on Friday 29 August to receive the award.

Other awards success

This latest award win follows success earlier this summer when the project and its partners Albion Drilling Group, CPE Consultancy, Jacobs and SBcContracts were recognised at the Ground Engineering Awards in June, winning the ‘UK Project with a Geotechnical Value of between £1m and £3m’ category.

This related to work undertaken at the Sandbed (known as Work Section 22) where the project team and its partners overcame significant unforeseen ground conditions to deliver a flood protection scheme on a highly constrained site, where alternative design options were limited.

The scheme has also been shortlisted in the Environmental Project Award Category of the British Construction Infrastructure Awards (BCIA) 2025 which will take place in October.

Conor Price, Project Director

“On behalf of Scottish Borders Council, the Project Team and the people of Hawick it was a huge honour to collect this award.

“The team have always recognised the challenges presented in delivering a project of this scale and complexity, and the people of Hawick have worked with us at every step on this journey.

“Ultimately the years of consultation and hard work in delivery are now being recognised, not just with the transformative new infrastructure in the town, but within the engineering industry via this award.”

Councillor John Greenwell, Executive Member for Roads and Public Space Development

“The Hawick Flood Protection Scheme is one of the largest infrastructure projects of its kind in Scotland. It not only addresses the pressing issue of flood protection by safeguarding over 970 homes but also integrates major investment into the town including a 7km active travel network.

“It is a feat of engineering demonstrating great skill and has only been made possible by the innovation and continued excellence of all those involved in the project. I would like to extend my congratulations to all those involved in the project who have contributed to this deserved award win.”
