The programme of events in the Scottish Borders for the free Doors Open Days Festival on 6 and 7 September 2025 is now available.
Buildings across the area will be among those participating in the festival this year, celebrating the theme ‘Heritage and Architecture: Windows to the Past, Doors to the Future’.
What to expect
Scottish Borders events taking place include the recently restored Union Chain Bridge on the River Tweed, the atmospheric Monteath Mausoleum, the birthplace of publishing pioneers at Biggiesknowe, Peebles, and the remarkable Roman remains at Trimontium. The programme highlights the extraordinary depth and variety of the region’s heritage.
Paxton House is opening its doors for the festival for the first time. Regarded as one of Scotland’s finest 18th-century houses, the house sits within 80 acres of landscaped grounds on the banks of the Tweed.
Visitors will be able to explore its beautifully preserved interiors, extensive art collection, surrounding parkland and discover how the house has been safeguarded for public benefit by an independent charitable trust.
Details of all the events and activities taking place both locally and nationally are available on the Doors Open Days website.
Councillor Simon Mountford, Executive Member for Planning and Community Assets
“Doors Open Days are always a fantastic celebration of our heritage, people and places.
“It’s a chance for Borders residents and visitors to step inside buildings that are normally closed to the public, allowing them to discover more about the architecture and stories that have shaped the Borders.
“I encourage everyone to take advantage of this free festival and enjoy exploring the wonderful variety of venues taking part this year.”
