Delighted to announce the resounding success of the VE Day 80th Anniversary Commemoration event held on Saturday, 10 May 2025.

The event which took place in Kelso Square and Floors Castle, was a heartfelt tribute to the bravery and sacrifices of those who served during World War II.

We'd like to thank the people of the Borders for the overwhelming support they showed, the community's participation and enthusiasm truly made the event memorable. The turnout was exceptional, with families, veterans, and serving service members coming together to honour this significant milestone.

Honouring the Legacy - Reflections from VE Day 80th Anniversary

Convener of Scottish Borders Council Councillor Watson McAteer, expressed his gratitude:

"We are deeply moved by the support and unity displayed by our communities. The rich history and community spirit of Kelso made it a fitting place for this commemoration. We are grateful to everyone who joined us in remembering and celebrating the bravery of those who served."

The event featured a series of activities, including a parade by veterans and cadets, live music performances by the Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, the Kings Own Scottish Borderers Veterans Pipe Band and Kelso Pipes and Drums and a Beating Retreat ceremony at Floors Castle. The Military Village, with its information stands and vintage vehicle displays, was a highlight for many attendees.

Lieutenant General John Cooper of The King's Own Scottish Borderers shared his thoughts:

"It was an honour to be involved in the VE Day 80th Anniversary Commemoration events in Kelso. We commemorated not only the fallen Borderers but all those who perished in Europe, including our sister Regiments, the men and women of The Royal Navy, The Royal Air Force, our Allies, and the many millions of civilians who died for our democratic way of life and the freedom we enjoy today."

The Duke of Roxburghe, who hosted the closing event at Floors Castle, added:

"It is both an honour and a privilige to be part of the commemoration for such an important day. The dedication, service, and sacrifice of so many fittingly honoured, and we are grateful to everyone who attended."

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped pull this event together the performers, and the audience for making this event a success.

Councillor John Greenwell, Armed Forces and Veterans Champion:

“The overwhelming support and participation from the people of the Borders made this event truly memorable. Let us continue to come together in remembrance and reflection, ensuring that the legacy of our veterans continues to inspire future generations. It is vital that the younger generation continues to remember the sacrifices made for our freedom."
