New Chief Executive appointed

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Mr David Robertson as Chief Executive (CE), which will take place with immediate effect.

Mr Robertson’s appointment follows an extensive selection process that considered both internal and external candidates from across the UK.

David has a broad and extensive knowledge of local government and vast experience at senior management level, which includes acting as Chief Executive since July 2022.

“This appointment follows a rigorous external recruitment process and internal assessment by cross-party members resulting in a unanimous decision to appoint Mr Robertson.

“On behalf of the elected members I would like to congratulate David on his appointment and stewardship of the Council over the last six months; he has more than proved his ability.  I am looking forward to continuing to work closely with him and his strategic leadership team as we move forward.”

About David

David joined us in 2011 as Chief Financial Officer. David is a qualified accountant. A graduate of Glasgow University. He trained with Lothian Region, and prior to joining with us worked in a variety of finance roles with the City of Edinburgh Council.  David is married to his wife Lyndsey and has two grown up children.

“I am delighted to take on the Chief Executive role on a permanent basis.  It’s an exciting time coming into this role, with a new Council Plan to progress, a Budget to agree and ambitious investment plans in new assets to deliver for the Borders.  I’m very much looking forward to working collectively with Elected Members, council colleagues, our community planning partners and local communities to address the current and future challenges we face as a Region and to optimise the opportunities across the Scottish Borders from our two City/ Region Deals.  I am greatly honoured to take on the permanent Chief Executive role and am committed to ensure together we all do our very best for the people of the Borders.” 

During his six months as acting Chief Executive David has actively contributed to the delivery of a plan to help with the cost of living crisis, a new child poverty action plan for the Borders, progressed the council’s digital strategy, the award winning Inspire Learning programme in schools and overseen the introduction of new technology in council care services. 

David is now working with Members and officer colleagues to deliver the Budget and new Council Plan which are currently out for Consultation and will launch in 2023.
