New play park in Duns officially opens

Published: 4th November 2022

A brand new £239k play park facility has been opened to the public in Duns.

Features of the new facility

The new facility replaces the older play park within Duns and includes an array of state-of-the art equipment.

Incorporated within the play park are a number of murals and features reflecting the town’s history, geography and surrounding nature. This includes a central play feature mirroring Duns Castle and a variety of murals depicting famous local scenes including a Jim Clark Lotus racing car.

In an effort to reduce waste and maximise the play experience for kids, some of the old play park equipment has been incorporated into the new facility to compliment the new equipment.

Suitable for ages 3-14, the play park facility has been designed as an access for all park and includes durable wet pour safety surfacing.

Wider investment in play parks and community outdoor spaces

The state of the art facility is part of a wider programme of investment across our play parks and outdoor community spaces programme.

Since 2018, seven other custom built play facilities have been opened in Harestanes, Galashiels, Kelso, Peebles, Hawick, Coldstream and Newtown St Boswells.

A custom built brand-new play park for Jedburgh is also due to be opened for early summer of 2023.

Earlier this year investment of over £4 million over the next seven years in play areas and community outdoor spaces was approved by the Council aiming to improve community wellbeing and enhance outdoor activity opportunities for all ages.

Councillor John Greenwell, Executive Member for Roads Development and Maintenance:

“Developing and enhancing community spaces and play areas across the Borders is a continued priority for the Council as a method of maintaining vibrant, sustainable and healthy communities.

“The opening of this new Duns facility will improve outdoor access for children in the local area and encourage greater physical activity, providing countless hours of fun for young people.”
