We are looking for two members of the public to join the Audit Committee

The committee’s membership currently comprises ten Councillors and two non-voting members for all audit-related business. The appointment of external members has been made every three years and they are required to be independent from the Council.

The two external members will support the committee in having high level oversight of our key frameworks and will provide an independent view.

Applicants are required to:

  • Work effectively with others in a committee environment
  • Have a good understanding of the role and its purpose
  • Have a broad understanding of local government and public sector environments
  • Have the confidence to challenge and question auditors and senior management
  • Understand both good financial management and risk management principles

The successful candidates will attend six scheduled virtual meetings per year plus attend mandatory Audit Committee virtual learning and development events.

The appointment is voluntary though any related expenses will be reimbursed.

The role will be for a fixed period to 31 October 2025 and those looking to apply for the role have until Friday 30 September 2022 to submit their application.

Councillor Elaine Thornton-Nicol, Chair of the Audit Committee

“The role of the independent external members is key to the running of our committee and at this challenging and interesting time for all local authorities this is an exciting opportunity to get involved in important public work.

“In previous years, we have received a high calibre of applicants and I am confident this year will be no different.”
