Significant number of roads to remain closed overnight

Fallen tree across a country road

A large number of roads, particularly rural routes, will remain closed into Sunday as the exceptionally strong and persistent winds over the past 24 hours have brought down hundreds of trees

All weather warnings for wind have now been removed by the Met Office, however a yellow warning for ice has been issued, valid from 5pm tonight to 11am on Sunday.

In need of help?

A dedicated helpline is available until 5pm on Saturday 27 November for anyone experiencing issues as a result of the storm. Please call 01835 826549.

From 5pm our normal out of hours emergency number will be available, 01896 752111.

Ice risk

It will remain windy throughout the day, however wind speeds are easing. Temperatures will drop, particularly in rural areas. Temperatures of minus 5 are likely quite widely, with minus 10 possible in some isolated areas.

As a result, our winter maintenance operations will start at 3pm today, and will be required again from 6am tomorrow.

Some staff and specialist contractors will continue to work throughout daylight hours today to clear primary routes currently closed due to fallen trees. This work will continue throughout Sunday, and potentially into next week due to the volume and size of some of the trees that have fallen.

At one location more than 50 trees have fallen, while on the A697 between Greenlaw and Coldstream six extremely large mature trees have come down.

The latest list of known roads affected can be found on our website.

Power outages

A number of homes remain without power and unfortunately the repairs required may mean that some communities will be without power into tomorrow.

We are working closely with Scottish Power Energy Networks to clear access where this is an issue, and to ensure that vulnerable residents are supported. Resilient Community groups have been contacted and asked to assist wherever possible.

Should you experience power cuts unexpectedly, please use the online postcode lookup or call 105.

If the outage poses a welfare issue then please call our helpline, 01835 826549 before 5pm on Saturday or 01896 752111 after 5pm.

Vaccination appointments

NHS Borders is encouraging those with vaccination appointments to check their travel route prior to leaving home, but to attend their appointment if possible.
