Connecting Borders is an initiative which has been created to provide digitally excluded households with devices, internet connectivity, training and support to help them get online

It builds on the success of a similar project co-ordinated by Connecting Scotland. This was delivered in three phases which were all supported across the Borders.

Supporting vulnerable individuals to get online

The aim is to support vulnerable individuals who face barriers to digital inclusion by providing them with:

  • a digital device: iPad or Chromebook
  • internet connectivity: a mobile WiFi hotspot with 12 months unlimited data
  • training and support: for staff to become digital champions to support people to use both devices and the internet confidently and safely

Working in partnership

The project is funded by South of Scotland Enterprise Agency and ourselves in partnership with Live Borders.

It is supported by the Scottish Borders Community Planning Partnership, which includes organisations such as:

  •  Registered Social Landlords
  • NHS Borders
  • Borders College
  • Third Sector organisations

Digital champions to provide support

Staff from across the Community Planning Partnership will be trained to provide digital champion support so they can assist the people they support to master digital foundations and building confidence online. It is hoped that this will increase social inclusion, improve access to services or improve access to skills and employment opportunities for those participating.

More information

Individuals cannot apply for a device directly. Applications for devices can be made by Community Planning Partners on behalf of the people they are supporting. The aim is to encourage organisations across the Borders access devices for those who face barriers to getting online.
