Peebles community urged to have their say on plans to replace High School

Published: 13th July 2021

As part of an ongoing consultation on plans to replace Peebles High School, members of the public are being encouraged to give their feedback on the proposals

Purpose of the ongoing consultation

The consultation has been running since 31 May.

The project will see the existing Peebles High School replaced with a transformational facility designed to support the delivery of a twenty first century curriculum with enhanced sporting facilities serving local clubs, organisations and the wider community.

The sole purpose of the current consultation is to consider the detail of the external designs for the new state-of-the-art campus, including the location and size of the site along with the design aesthetic of the new building.

The consultation will not focus on the operational design or internal look of the finished facility, both of which will be developed in a flexible and responsive way to support effective learning and teaching.

The consultation information outlines plans for the building to be built over two-storeys on the grounds of the existing school and explains the decision making behind the proposed look and feel of the facility, which has been heavily influenced by the surrounding Peebles area.

Website stats

In the four week period since its launch, the consultation website had recorded over 2k total visits, with visitors spending an overall total of 27 days and 21 hours on the site at an average of 18 minutes per visit.

Online public meetings in August and further consultation

Online public meetings are set to be held in August where we will showcase the designs for the Campus and explain the decision making for the project. Members of the public are being encouraged to attend and provide their feedback on the initial designs available through the online consultation space.

Further consultation with the public, focusing on the internal design and feel of the Campus, will take place as the project progresses.

This consultation will run until late August, after which a summary report examining the feedback will be produced as part of a full planning application.

A timeline of 24 months has been outlined for the initial construction of the new school building.

Councillor Carol Hamilton, Executive Member for Children and Young People

“By replacing Peebles High School with a brand new, modern community campus, we will be able to meet the needs and aspirations of our young people by creating world class education facilities which also offer a wide range of community benefits.

“We want to create a facility that recognises and celebrates the unique beauty of the Peebles area which can become a focal point for the surrounding area. Careful thought and consideration has been taken in designing a building that reflects the history of the town and blends in to its local environment.

“We are extremely keen to hear from as many people from the Peebles community as possible on the proposals. Your feedback is crucial in helping inform our decisions and develop a building that the people of Peebles can be proud of.”
