Cheviot Community Fund opens to support local projects

Published: 5th July 2021

The Cheviot Community Fund for 2021-22 is now open with £54,888.50 available for local community projects

The fund provides support and assistance with the development of community-based projects for voluntary and community groups that are active in their local area.

Application process and eligibility criteria

Groups who wish to take forward projects that will be of benefit to the local community can apply for grants up to the value of £2.5k.

The impact of the project needs to be measurable in terms of both the number of community members benefiting and the scale of that benefit, but funding can be used for a variety of purposes such as:

  • purchase of equipment
  • small capital works
  • hire and running costs
  • maintenance costs
  • capacity building projects

The grants are being allocated in four rounds with £13,722 available in each round.

The closing date for applications to the first round is Monday 16 August.

All applications will be evaluated by an assessment panel who will then make their recommendations to the Cheviot Area Partnership. They will then be considered as part of the agenda for meetings to be held on:

  • 22 September 2021
  • 24 November 2021
  • 26 January 2022
  • 23 March 2022

Examples of previous projects

Some examples of previous projects that have been awarded funding include:

  • secondary windows at Lothian Hall Community Centre in Crailing
  • archaeological exploration work in Morebattle
  • a sound system to assist Kelso Camera Club during presentations
  • hand held radios for the Jedburgh Community Resilience Group
  • print costs for Edgerston Village Hall’s memory book
  • a portable wheelchair ramp and hearing loops for Cheviot Youth

Councillor Robin Tatler, Executive Member for Community Development and Localities

“I am delighted to be able to confirm that the Cheviot Community Fund is now open. The Community Fund process has been amended by a group, including local community representatives, supported by SBC officers, who understand what will best suit groups in the Cheviot locality. The Fund is a tremendous opportunity for residents and groups to get together and think about how a grant could be used to fund initiatives in their local area.

“A good starting point is some of the great ideas that have been successful in the past but I am also sure that people will be thinking about other new and innovative projects that will be worthy of consideration. What is important that you get your application in ahead of the closing date so you don’t miss out.”

Build Back a Better Borders Recovery Fund

Applications are also welcomed for the Build Back a Better Borders Recovery Fund, established as part of the response and recovery efforts relating COVID-19.

The fund is available for one-off new initiatives and projects and has been divided between the five localities:

  • Berwickshire
  • Cheviot
  • Eildon
  • Teviot and Liddesdale
  • Tweeddale

It is open from 1 June 2021 to 31 May 2022 and is available to both constituted groups (maximum £15k) and non-constituted groups (maximum £5k, with payment through an umbrella body). A fast track process is available for applications of up to £1.5k. Funding will be allocated on a one-off basis only.
