Winter and gritting FAQs

Salt bins

A salt bin is empty, how can I get it refilled?

We ensure the bins we maintain are full at the start of the winter season, and aim to keep then filled during the winter.

During periods of exceptional weather you may find that the bin is low on salt, and you can complete our online form to ask us to refill a bin.

The form has a comprehensive list of every bin that we service, so if the bin you’re looking for isn’t on the list it’s probably one that is privately maintained or on a new development that hasn’t been adopted yet.

Why did you take our salt bin away?

Risk based analysis of all salt bin locations was carried out, and as a result some bins were removed. This could have been because the bin:

  • was on a pavement, road, or in a carpark that we haven't adopted as part of the public network
  • was on a primary gritting route
  • didn’t rate high enough in the risk based analysis

Can I apply for a salt bin for my road?

You can apply online to have a new grit bin location considered. An assessment will be carried out, and if it meets the risk evaluation criteria a bin will be placed in an appropriate location the following winter.

Why did you refuse my application for a new salt bin?

Your application has gone through an assessment and has not met our agreed evaluation criteria.

Can a community purchase a salt bin?

Contact your local Resilient Communities group or Community Council to discuss the practicality of installing a new salt bin.
