As agreed within the 2026-27 budget we are not supplying Christmas trees to communities this year.
We recognise how important festive displays are to local communities and we will continue to support the practical installation of a Christmas tree in locations that have previously received a tree from us, should communities arrange for their own tree.
We will also support the installation of tree lighting where this was provided previously.

What factors were considered in the decision to remove Christmas tree provision?
As part of the budget setting process councillors considered a range of proposals on activities that we are not legally obliged to provide. This was based on resource prioritisation and budget availability. While there was no specific question in the online budget consultation about Christmas trees, 47% of 602 responses supported less festive spending.
What support will be available in 2026 to communities that previously received a tree?
Support will be available to those communities that previously recevied a tree from us:
- We can provide advice about the specification and sourcing of a tree
- We can support the practical installation of a Christmas tree in locations that have previously received a tree should you wish to self-fund a tree in your community. The sourcing, transportation and placement of trees in their location will be the responsibility of the community/supplier. Once the tree is in position our staff can assist in ensuring the tree is installed correctly with the appropriate supports, checks and safety fencing where this has been supplied in the past.

- We can also dismantle and dispose of Christmas trees on behalf of communities.
Can communities light the trees themselves if they wish?
Yes, in consultation with our Lighting team who can advise on ensuring a safe and compliant connection.
What is the timeframe for installing Christmas trees?
In previous years we have ensured trees are installed and dressed in time for the various light-up events that take place. This has generally necessitated installation in mid-November to ensure sufficient time for dressing of the trees.
Can you advise of the costs involved for purchase, delivery and installation if a community wished to purchase their own tree?
This would be subject to the available pricing information from the supplier. As a guideline, in most recent years the cost to us for supply, delivery and installation was between £1100 and £2100 per tree, depending on size.
In terms of disposal of any self-funded tree, what support will you provide?
We are happy to arrange uplift and disposal of Christmas trees in 2026/27 if required.
Are there costs involved for the support we will provide this year?
No, we will not charge for this service in 2026/27.
Can communities pay us to supply a tree?
This is not an option for 2026/27.
Will Christmas trees funded by communities be covered by our insurance?
As ownership of the trees would lie with the community councils/community groups, we require that they have their own insurance cover in place. We will continue to inspect any trees installed on grounds of public safety, such as after high wind/storm events. Should any risk be identified, we will take any measures to make safe and will notify the responsible community council/community group of any measures undertaken.
Can communities consider a living Christmas tree or an alternative structure instead?
We would be happy to support communities considering a living Christmas tree or alternatives to cut trees, such as artificial trees or art displays.
What will happen after Christmas 2026?
The position will be reviewed for future years as part of our annual budget setting process.
