A red weather warning for wind has been issued for much of the Scottish Borders on Friday. This highlights very dangerous conditions, including danger to life and significant disruption.
The warning runs from 10am to 5pm on Friday. Peak gusts of 80-90mph are expected widely.
An amber weather warning for wind covers the whole of the Scottish Borders from 6am to 9pm on Friday with wind speeds of up to 70mph likely across those areas not covered by the red warning.

Service information
- All our schools and early learning and childcare facilities are closed on Friday
- All kerbside waste and recycling collection and trade waste collections are cancelled on Friday. Alternative collection information is available on our Missed Bins webpage
- Our Community Recycling Centres (CRCs), waste transfer stations and weighbridges will be closed. CRC are expected to open again as scheduled on Saturday 25 January and waste transfer stations and weighbridges will reopen on Monday 27 January.
- All Contact Centres and Social Work offices will be closed
- All our public transport services are cancelled on Friday
- Care at home services will operate on a risk-based approach, focusing on supporting those most at need. Families are asked to help wherever possible and safe to do so
- Service disruption may continue into the weekend depending on conditions and clear up efforts
Response
A multi-agency Incident Response Group will operate from our Emergency Control Centre throughout the red and amber warning periods to co-ordinate the response and any recovery efforts.
Please note that with strong winds expected into Saturday it may take some time before it is safe for us to clear fallen trees.
