The Local Government Elections will take place in May 2027, when voters in the Scottish Borders will elect councillors to Scottish Borders Council.

As we approach the election further details and guidance will be added to the following webpages to support those considering standing for election or acting as an election agent.
Nomination papers, election notices and key election documents will also be published and made available via these on pages as they become available.

Who can stand as a candidate?
To stand as a candidate in a Scottish local government election, you must meet the eligibility requirements set out in electoral legislation.
You do not need to have previous political experience or to be a member of a political party. Independent candidates may also stand for election.
Further guidance on eligibility and disqualification criteria will be provided in the candidate information packs and briefing sessions.
Elect Her
We support efforts to encourage greater diversity in local democracy.
Elect Her is a national initiative which seeks to increase the representation of women in politics and support women who are considering standing for elected office.
The programme offers information, training, mentoring and networking opportunities for prospective candidates.
Candidate briefing sessions
The Returning Officer will host briefing sessions for prospective candidates and election agents in advance of the election.
The sessions will cover:
- The nomination process.
- Key election dates and deadlines.
- Candidate spending and donations.
- Campaigning rules.
- Postal vote opening arrangements.
- The count process.
- The role of Councillors and expectations of elected members.

Candidate safety and wellbeing
Standing for election is a rewarding experience, but candidates may also face challenges, particularly online.
Candidates are encouraged to:
- Consider personal and online security arrangements.
- Report intimidation, threats or harassment to the police where appropriate.
- Familiarise themselves with guidance on safe campaigning.
- Seek support from political parties or campaign organisations where relevant.
