2027 Tour de France in the Scottish Borders

Stage one of the Tour de France, the world’s most prestigious cycle race, will come through the Scottish Borders on Friday 2 July 2027.

See our news story for local reaction.

Route

High level route information was announced in January 2026. Further details are expected to be published by the race organiser later this year.

The stage one route in brief is:

  • Edinburgh
  • Innerleithen
  • Galashiels
  • Melrose
  • Hawick
  • Newcastleton
  • Carlisle

Impact

The Tour de France is the largest free to spectate sporting event in the world, attracting millions of roadside spectators each year.

The worldwide television audience over the three-week race is measured in billions.

Hosting the majority of the first stage in 2027 is expected to have a very significant social and economic impact for the Scottish Borders.

Riders

The world’s best professional cycling teams and riders compete in the Tour de France.

23 teams with eight riders each took part in the 2025 race.

We are fortunate that two local riders are currently signed to UCI WorldTour teams, Kelso’s Oscar Onley (Ineos Grenadiers) and Peebles’ Callum Thornley (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe).

Community and business engagement

Following the high-level route announcement we will begin early engagement with communities and businesses along the route.

We want to work together to ensure that we all maximise the benefits of this incredible opportunity.

Event planning

We have hosted many professional road cycling events in recent years, including 11 stages of the Tour of Britain (Men and Women) between 2009 and 2025, and mountain biking events in the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships.

This experience will stand us in good stead as work with the race organiser and local and national partners to deliver the best possible event in 2027.

Road closures

The Tour de France operates under full road closures, with the Tour’s famous publicity caravan travelling the route ahead of the riders and engaging with spectators.

After the race itself passes, roads will be reopened as promptly as possible.

Full details of the associated road closures will be available once the full route detail is finalised and released by the race organiser, including the routes to be taken through our communities.

UCI Bike Region

The South of Scotland is establishing itself as Scotland’s leading cycling destination and has been awarded UCI Bike Region status, recognising the region’s commitment to both elite cycling competition and cycling for all.

The vision of the South of Scotland Cycling Partnership, of which we are a leading partner, is that by 2032 cycling is embedded into the daily fabric of the lives of residents and experiences of visitors to the region.
