Team Read:  The National Summer Reading Challenge in Libraries

Come along to your local library during the summer holidays to take part in this year's Summer Reading Challenge:  Team Read

You will receive a free "animated" membership card and your challenge then is to read up to 6 books from the Library during the summer to achieve Bronze, Silver and Gold stickers.  After you have read 6 books, you will be presented with your own medal to keep.

Not sure what books to choose?  Your local Librarian can help "coach" you, as well as tell you what other activities are on offer at the Library during the summer in the run up to the Olympics, such as craft sessions and storytimes.

Ask at your local Library or call Library Headquarters on 01750 20842 for further information

New Library Management System Launched

The new computerised library management system was officially launched by the Executive Member for Culture, Sport and Community Education, Councillor Graham Garvie, at Coldstream library at the end of May. The system consists of separate units for staff use, such as issuing and returning items, catalogue updating and stock ordering, as well as the public access Web  OPAC – the library catalogue.

The new, up-to-date system, known as Vubis Smart, will provide improved catalogue searching facilities, which will give users in public and school libraries wider access to resources on-line and improved access to stock. Vubis Smart is Windows-based, which means that screen layouts will look more familiar to users, and will be more accessible and easier to use.

There is now pictorial content in the library catalogue, and Aquabrowser, an enhanced public access catalogue with more options for searching, will be available later in the year.

Because the new system is Smartcard compliant, it will help to deliver the Council’s “Customer First” programme, and its modernisation agendas. During the rest of 2008 Library and Information Services will be asking current users to re-register for a Borderscard, thereby updating borrower information. If library users already have a National Entitlement (Young Scot and Senior Citizens’) card, this can be used in place of a library membership card. The Council is also introducing a National Entitlement Smartcard for the 26 – 59 age group, and library membership will be the first of the “smart” range of services. Re-registration will be starting in June, so watch out for further details in your local library.
