Caravans, trailers and horseboxes
If you’re the owner of a caravan, trailer, horsebox or any other towed item, you need to consider carefully where you will store it when you’re not using it.
Where you can’t store a caravan, trailer or horsebox
With vehicle ownership on the increase, the pressure on parking is increasing, and caravans, trailers and horseboxes can often cause an obstruction and take up valuable parking spaces. This means you can’t store them on the road or in a public car park
It’s your responsibility to find a suitable off-road, off-verge location to store it when you’re not using it.
Why do I have to move it, it’s been parked in the same place for some time
We’ve received a number of complaints from members of the public about caravans, trailers, horseboxes and other items which are causing an obstruction. Regardless of how long a vehicle has been in stored in its current location.
Removing a caravan, trailer or horsebox
Under Section 59 of the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984 we have the powers to remove any item that’s causing an obstruction on the road.
If we consider your vehicle to be causing an obstruction, we’ll ask you to remove it with 7 days by issuing you with a notice of removal. Failure to comply is punishable on conviction by a maximum fine of £200.
What happens if you don’t move your vehicle
If you don’t find somewhere else to store your caravan, trailer or horsebox we’ll arrange for it to be removed.
We’ll store it for a maximum of 28 days, and we may dispose of it after this period. We’ll also pursue you for the cost of removing and storing your vehicle.
You’re required to store your vehicle off road, so moving it to another section of the road or another car park is not sufficient.
Damage to vehicles and their contents when they’re removed
When we’re removing a vehicle we arrange for it to be winched onto a low loader and transported to a compound.
We take as must care as is practicable when removing a vehicle, but we’re not responsible for any damage to it, or its contents when it’s being removed.
Getting your caravan, trailer or horsebox back
The charges are:
- £150 for removal
- £20 per day of storage

What happens if you only want the contents of your vehicle back
Contact the named person on the notice to arrange a suitable time to visit the compound. You’ll still be required to pay the reasonable costs of the removal and storage or your vehicle.
