For those living in rural areas where no static library is available, we currently have six mobile libraries which regularly visit smaller communities and ensure that they have access to the wide range of services offered at all our libraries in Scottish Borders.
Each vehicle carries a range of books, talking books, music CD's and DVD's to suit all age groups and all are equipped with disabled access and a hearing loop.
Mobile 1 serves the Berwickshire area and is based at Duns Library.
Mobile 3 serves the larger villages on a two week schedule. It covers an area from West Linton in the West of the region to Chirnside in the East. This mobile is based at our Selkirk headquarters.
Mobile 4 serves the Peebles area, from Clovenfords across to Broughton. This mobile is based Eshiels Depot Peebles, but works out of Innerleithen Library.
Mobile 5 serves both the Ettrick and Yarrow valleys as well as the Newtown , Kelso areas. This mobile is based at our Selkirk headquarters.
Mobile 6 serves mainly Teviotdale area down to Newcastleton. This mobile is based at our Selkirk headquarters.
Mobile 7 serves the Central Borders area from Lauder down to Jedburgh, This mobile is based at our Selkirk headquarters.
The normal frequency of visits is once every three weeks but some villages currently receive a two weekly service. The Mobile Library Routes are available on application or online.
If you are already a member, take your Scottish Borders Libraries card with you when you see the mobile library at a stop near you. If you are not a member, take proof of your identity and address (e.g. a utility bill or a driver's licence) and ask to join. You can borrow up to 30 books or talking books and you will be able to borrow straight away.
If someone wishes to apply for a stop, they should contact us or visit the mobile library when it is in the area.
Unfortunately there are occasions when we have to withdraw the service due to dangerous weather conditions, breakdowns or maintenance, however we will do all we can to notify you.
Housebound Services
We deliver a housebound library service to borrowers who are more or less confined to their home, for the very old or for persons with disability who cannot reach their local library. Please contact us for further information on this service.
Books On Wheels uses volunteers to provide reading material to housebound readers living in Galashiels. Please contact Galashiels library staff for more details.
