Self-build
Building your own home can help you to own the home of your dreams, where the house has been tailored to suit your needs and lifestyle.
There is a lot to consider and it is therefore important that you access the correct information and advice. You will need to consider the following:
- the type of house you want to build
- purchasing land
- the building costs
- obtaining a self-build loan and/or mortgage
- relevant planning permission
- site insurance
- connecting to utilities
The Scottish Government, and other organisations, have a number of useful guides and helpful information available on their websites, including advice on Scotland's Self Build Loan Fund which offers loans of up to £175,000 to assist with construction fees for self-build projects. The Scottish Government reopened the scheme from 21 November 2022, and applications are open for an initial period of 3 years.
See the Scottish Government's Self-building a home webpages for more guidance.
