General repair grants for property owners

Hawick CARS is offering grants for traditional repair and restoration works to property owners. Applications for funding are being sought in a series of competitive rounds. Funding will be allocated against a set of eligibility criteria with each application scored against the:

  • need for repair
  • impact within the conservation area
  • quality of repair
  • habitable status
  • project fdliverability

Eligibility

The general repair grant scheme will run until all of the funding is allocated. Any building within the defined Hawick CARS Boundary  may be eligible for consideration.

Applications can be submitted for:

  • domestic properties
  • commercial properties
  • shopfronts

Normal maintenance work is not eligible. The works must be carried out to conservation standards by a suitably experienced professional/contractor.

How much grant aid can I apply for?

  • grant aid for repair works will be in the range of 50%-75% of costs up to a maximum of £15k of funding per building
  • grant aid for reinstatement of original architectural features (including historically accurate shopfronts) can be up to 90% of costs up to a maximum of £15k of funding per building
  • minor repairs can receive up to £5k of funding per building and require two quotes for the works to be submitted with the application
  • major repairs can receive up to £15k of funding per building and require the appointment of a professional agent and three quotes for the works to be submitted with the application

Grant aid cannot be offered for works already completed.

How to apply

Please contact Hawick CARS online in the first instance. We will then arrange a pre-application meeting with you to discuss the project, the eligibility criteria and the grant application process. All potential applicants are encouraged to discuss their proposals with the Hawick CARS officer before submitting their formal application.

Grant offers can be made to owners up to 30 September 2023 (subject to funding availability).

Grant aided work must be completed and claims finalised by 31 December 2023.

Who can carry out the work?

Grant eligible works must be undertaken by a suitable experienced building professional and/or building contractor and must be to accepted conservation standards.

  • all building professionals or contractors involved in CARS funded repair works will be asked to complete a questionnaire to demonstrate their relevant experience in similar work. View the Professional Agent Requirements Guidance
  • where experience cannot be demonstrated Hawick CARS can offer limited funding for Tradition Skills Training to encourage upskilling among local professionals
  • conservation Accreditation is not essential for the majority of CARS funded repair projects
  • Historic Environment Scotland publishes a range of information leaflets covering roofs, external walls, doorways and more
